On the variational approach to Jastrow correlations in nuclei

1973

The variational equation determining the Jastrow correlation function is investigated with particular emphasis on the healing problem for both nuclear matter and finite nuclei. The consequences of several healing conditions are discussed. Furthermore, influences from the choice of the single particle basis and from long range correlations are studied and are found to be small in the short range region.

Towards an Experimental Determination of the Transition Strength Between the Ground States of $^{20}$F and $^{20}$Ne

2017

Electron capture on $^{20}$Ne is thought to play a crucial role in the final evolution of electron-degenerate ONe stellar cores. Recent calculations suggest that the capture process is dominated by the second-forbidden transition between the ground states of $^{20}$Ne and $^{20}$F, making an experimental determination of this transition strength highly desirable. To accomplish this task we are refurbishing an intermediate-image magnetic spectrometer capable of focusing 7 MeV electrons, and designing a scintillator detector surrounded by an active cosmic-ray veto shield, which will serve as an energy-dispersive device at the focal plane.

Effects of Difficulty in Handling Emotions and Social Interactions on Nomophobia: Examining the Mediating Role of Feelings of Loneliness

2022

Abstract This study was addressed to assess nomophobia in an Italian sample (N = 456, 53.1% men, Mage = 31.8, SD = 11.1), also providing a deeper knowledge about how it is distributed across demographics, as well as identifying its best predictors. The main goal was to investigate the direct and indirect effects of difficulty in emotion regulation and social interaction anxiety on nomophobia through loneliness. Our findings indicated that loneliness explained the effect of the expressive suppression strategy (fully) and social interaction anxiety (partially) on nomophobia, whereas it was not a significant mediator when the cognitive reappraisal strategy was taken into account. Our study sug…

Du verbe instrumental dans la musique subsaharienne

2021

Sub-Saharan music results from the spoken language/instrumental language relation, directed by an oral culture. In this culture, these languages transmit ? beyond their singularities ? messages thanks to either a coded signal known by the linguistic community or previously defined among a group of individuals, or is used as a true meta-language copied on the articulated and usual language used every day. Here, an instrumental musical speech can then imitate and reproduce the tonal inflexions of the language to make its matter understandable. This fact is the natural result of a strong interaction and interrelation between the spoken language and the music as well as the conception that the …

Perceptual interactions in odour mixtures: The blending effect

2011

The odour perceived from a mixture of odorants varies depending on several factors as the context, individual physiological abilities, experience… but also as the perceptual interactions occurring over the processing of odorant mixtures. Sometimes, these interactions which appear during odour information coding and processing, lead to synergy or masking of odour notes (1). In other occasions, they lead to a blending effect. Odour blending appears when a mixture is perceived as a unique odour different from the odour of its components (1, 2). This type of mixture is well known by perfumers and flavourists who daily construct and use it in an empirical fashion. Here, we conducted a series of …

Controlling the wetting properties of the Asakura-Oosawa model and applications to spherical confinement.

2012

We demonstrate for the Asakura-Oosawa model and an extension of this model that uses continuous rather than hard potentials, how wetting properties at walls can be easily controlled. By increasing the interaction range of the repulsive wall potential acting on the colloids (while keeping the polymer-wall interactions constant) polymers begin to substitute colloids at walls and the system can be driven from complete wetting of colloids via partial wetting to complete wetting of polymers. As an application, we discuss the morphology and wetting behavior of colloid-polymer mixtures in spherical confinement. We apply the recently developed 'ensemble switch method' where the Hamiltonian is exten…

Kilencévesek a lakatlan szigeten : az érvelés szituációs beágyazottságának jelei. Esettanulmány

2015

This case study is a qualitative analysis of a video-recorded reasoning situation in which a pair of nine year old children argues for tools that should be taken to a deserted island. The students’ answers to a sociometric questionnaire are taken into account to establish background data on the children’s social positions in their clas and into their relationship. This information was used to interpret the multimodal data. A creative problemsolving task was the context of the reasoning situation, where the children were asked to choose 7 objects from 17 to be taken to a deserted island. Although there are many studies on children’s reasoning, it’s bodily and socially distributed nature has …

Technology in culture : a theoretical discourse on convergence in human-technology interaction

2014

Technology touches so many facets of contemporary life that one is not necessarily conscious any more of how and why it affects daily experience. Awareness of technology’s role often surfaces only when something goes wrong with a product. At that moment, people become aware of a misalignment between their ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, and the form/function of a product, presumably designed to make life easier. Equally ubiquitous and beyond daily awareness are cognitive, affective, and behavioural processes patterned by culture. It has been noted that cultural factors influence the perception and usage of technology. Understanding these processes is important to researchers, design…

The Use of Question Modification Strategies to Differentiate Instruction in Eritrean Mathematics and Science Classrooms

2023

This qualitative study aimed at examining the question modification strategies Eritrean elementary and middle school teachers used to differentiate their instruction and meet the diversity in the classroom as well as the functions these strategies served in classroom interactions. The research data consisted of videotaped recordings (N = 11 videotaped lessons) of classroom interactions in eight mathematics and science classrooms, which were analysed through interaction analysis. The findings showed that Eritrean teachers utilised the following five question modification strategies either independently or in combination: repetition; rephrasing; clarification; decomposition; and code-switchin…
